How your gift can support us

Leaving a gift or legacy to the Royal Institution can help us keep connecting adults and children with science and engaging them in a conversation about science and its impact on our lives.

Because of you, future generations will be able to enjoy our iconic CHRISTMAS LECTURES, take part in our public programme of science talks for adults and families, have access to our education and outreach programmes, engage with our heritage and museum collections, and more.

Your support for the Royal Institution can truly make a difference from today.

We hope, after you've catered for your loved ones, you will also consider leaving even a small share of your estate to the Ri.

Write your will for free online or over the phone

We’ve teamed up with Farewill, the largest Will writer in the UK, to offer you the opportunity to write your will for free from the comfort of your own home.

The online service is available in England and Wales only and the telephone service in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Contact a solicitor to write your will

We strongly recommend you consult a qualified legal adviser when preparing or amending your will.

You can find a qualified solicitor through Remember a Charity and The Law Society, who both provide comprehensive lists.

Types of gifts and legacies

There are a number of ways to leave a gift in your will to the Ri.

Unrestricted legacies are particularly helpful to us, as they enable us to use your gift where the need is greatest at the time.

A pecuniary gift

This is a donation of a fixed sum of money or shares.

A residuary gift

This is a gift of all, or a percentage of, your estate after all other payments and bequests have been made.

A specific gift

This is a gift of an item or a collection of items.

Reduce your inheritance tax

A gift to the Ri will not only help inspire future generations with science, but as a charitable gift it will reduce your inheritance tax.

  • The Ri is a registered charity and all gifts are tax-exempt
  • If you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity, your loved ones will benefit from an inheritance rate of 36% instead of 40%
