The Royal Institution (Ri) is pleased to announce a new partnership with Butlin’s and L’Oréal UK & Ireland to launch Science Zones across Butlin’s three resorts, located in Bognor Regis, Skegness and Minehead.

The Science Zones will be open throughout school holidays in 2017 offering drop-in activities and ticketed workshops with exciting hands-on science for families. The Ri and L’Oréal previously partnered with Butlin’s in 2016 for their Astonishing Family Science Weekends.

The aim of the partnership is to provide entertaining and educational science activities to Butlin’s resort visitors and is expected to engage more than 400,000 young people and families with science.

The Ri will provide expert training and resources based on our popular L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre (LYSC) programme to Butlin’s facilitators who will deliver these science workshops on-site. Holidaymakers will be invited to experiment with chemistry by making their own bath bomb and playing with colour.

Professor Gail Cardew, Director of Science and Education at the Ri, said: “We are thrilled that Butlin’s has provided an opportunity to expand the impact of the great science education and communication work that the Royal Institution and L’Oréal UK & Ireland have collaborated on for so many years. The Ri is committed to sharing the wonders and applications of science across the UK and the Butlin’s Science Zones are a great opportunity to share our expertise and engage many more families in exciting hands-on activities.”

Karina O’Gorman, ‎Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at L'Oréal UK & Ireland, said: “For L’Oréal, science is our past, present and future.  Our business is grounded in innovation and invention and our extraordinary achievements have made us the world’s number one beauty company.  We are committed to using our resources to build confidence in science for people of all ages, abilities, background and genders. The creation of the L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre at the Royal Institution has been testament to our commitment and we are very excited to see that more young people will have the opportunity to think more deeply about science through hands-on activities in partnership with the Royal Institution at the Butlin’s Science Zones.”

Hywel Lewis, Partnerships Manager at Butlin’s, said: “We are delighted to be working with The Royal Institution and L’Oréal UK & Ireland once again following the success of our Astonishing Family Science Weekends in 2016. The partnership offers a fantastic opportunity for families to engage in fun yet educational science activities, and the Science Zones are available on all schools-out breaks throughout the year. We’re certain the activities will be a sure-fire hit with our guests, and will no doubt inspire a new generation of budding scientists.”
