Support at Ri Masterclasses

At the Ri, we believe that science is for everyone. We are committed to ensuring that all our Masterclass attendees have everything they need to enjoy and participate fully in their experience.

The Masterclass team is always on hand to provide any additional support you may need, helping to ensure you have the best possible experience during the Masterclasses. Please contact us at masterclasses@ri.ac.uk to discuss how we can best support you.

Accessibility

Masterclasses at the Ri take place over three floors, all of which are wheelchair accessible and serviced by a lift. 

Sensory support items are available for all visitors at the reception desk. This includes sunflower lanyards, ear defenders and sunglasses. Please return any borrowed items at the end of the day. 

There is a dedicated quiet room available in the Writing Room, and a prayer space in the Speakers Room, both situated on the first floor. Please speak to a member of the team on the day if you would like to make use of these spaces, and to confirm any room changes. 

For those who would find it helpful, we can arrange a venue walkaround and introduce you to your supervisors before your Masterclass. This usually takes place half an hour before the workshop starts. Please contact us if you would like us to arrange this for you. 


Induction loops are available in the Theatre. If you would like to use one, please ask a member of staff, who will be happy to help. You can also find more information in the documents below.

We can also reserve priority seating for anyone who is unable to use the stairs. You can let us know in advance or a member of staff will be able to assist on the day. 

Venue details

Masterclasses are held in different rooms across the building, depending on your assigned group. The team will let you know where your sessions will take place and inform you of any weekly room changes.

Classes commonly take place in the Conversation Room and Sunley Room (ground floor), Library, Demonstration Room, and Georgian Room (first floor), as well as the Young Scientist Centre (YSC, lower ground floor).

There is usually a dedicated quiet room available in the Writing Room, and a prayer space in the Speakers Room, both situated on the first floor. Please speak to a member of the team if you would like to make use of these spaces, and to confirm any changes in rooms.

There are staircases to take you to each floor, and one lift. All floor levels are announced in the lift.

Toilets are located on the ground floor. These include male, female, gender neutral and accessible toilets. 

The Ri is located a 5-minute walk from Green Park underground station, 10-minute walk from Bond Street underground station or Piccadilly Circus. There is no free parking near the Ri, however, Blue Badge holders can park for free in designated bays on Cork Street and Mayfair Place, a short walk away.

Emergency Evacuation

In the rare event of a building evacuation, if you are unable to evacuate independently, a member of the team will escort you to the nearest safe refuge point in the building, before you are assisted out of the building when safe to do so. We will request that a PEEP be put in place before the first session, and this is likely to state that you will need a buddy to stay with you at a refuge point, most likely your parent/guardian. Our team undergo regular evacuation procedure training and drills to keep you safe. Please let a member of the team know in advance or upon arrival if you are unable to evacuate independently. 

Safeguarding

We have a Masterclasses Code of Conduct, which all attendees of Masterclasses are expected to follow. 

There will be at least one supervisor present throughout the Masterclass, in each room. If you are uncomfortable about anything, for example, something another person is saying or doing, you can tell one of the supervisors in your room. They will deal with the matter appropriately and as quickly as possible.

We keep everyone who takes part in Ri Masterclasses safe. All Ri staff and volunteers working at Masterclasses will have the right DBS check and safeguarding training for their role, and a first aid trained member of staff will be present on the day.
