The Ri launches its Autumn programme of spectacular science

With events ranging from the evolution of flight to the future of the quantum internet.

People in the Ri Theatre

The Royal Institution of Great Britain (Ri), where many of the scientific advances that shape our lives have been unveiled for the very first time, has announced its Autumn 2023 Programme of science and culture.

From the potential of the quantum internet to be truly unhackable, to a revolution in our understanding of the Neanderthals, to the extraordinary life of a white hole, world-class thinkers from science and culture are lined up and ready to deliver transformative talks to the most curious minds.

There’s also plenty of opportunities for families and young people, with a Family Fun Day full of surprising science; the maths (and magic!) behind Rubik’s cube; and the return of Ri favourite Andrew Szydlo to explore the explosive science of sulfur.

The events all take place in the Ri’s iconic lecture theatre – where scientists have been sharing their latest innovations for centuries, from the first announcement of the invention of photography and discovery of the electron, to the first demonstrations of the principles of climate change and the electric generator.

Highlights of the Autumn programme include:

Soaring through time: From pterosaurs to butterfliesLev Parikian explores the incredible evolutionary story of life on the wing all the way back to the first fluttering insect 300 million years ago

An introduction to quantum theory (short course)Dr James Millen returns to present a six-part introduction to the world of quantum theory, demystifying the most enigmatic area of physics.

Ultra-processed people: The harsh reality of ultra-processed food - Join award-winning broadcaster, practising NHS doctor and leading academic Chris van Tulleken as he explores the invention of UPF and its impact on our health and weight.

The Turing Lectures: How AI broke the internet – this 3-lecture series in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute will explore the rapidly emerging field of AI and how it is impacting our society

Ada Lovelace Day Live! - Now in it's 15th year, Ada Lovelace Day Live is a global celebration, highlighting and honouring the achievements of women in STEM

I’ve been thinking: Seeking a life of the mind – renowned philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel C Dennett leads a captivating journey of intellectual exploration through his own life

Genetics: Standing on the shoulders of prejudice – JBS Haldane Lecturer Adam Rutherford discusses the inherently political nature of science, and how we must hold our intellectual predecessors accountable

Discourse: Carlo Rovelli explores white holesExplore the mysteries of these cosmic phenomena with one of the greatest physicists of our time, Carlo Rovelli

Not just for the boys – distinguished physicist Dame Athene Donald uses her own personal experience to discuss the importance of women’s contribution to science

Brimstone, volcanoes and fire with Andrew Szydlo - Ri favourite Andrew Szydlo is back at the Ri once again for an all-new lecture exploring the amazing, and sometimes explosive chemistry of sulfur.

The Ri’s Autumn Programme runs until 6 December. The full programme of events is available on our What's on page.
