Christmas is coming, and we have some seasonal science questions! Why do crackers go bang? How do fairy lights work? Why brussels sprouts make you fart?

Join CBBC and YouTube presenter Maddie Moate for a dose of festive cheer as she answers all these questions and more in this interactive talk packed with demos and wacky Christmas facts.

Maddie also explores how different people around the world celebrate the Christmas period, and the curious history behind festive traditions.

This event is sure to leave you feeling cosy, curious and full of holiday spirit!

Copies of Maddie’s latest book 'A Very Curious Christmas’ will be available to purchase after the event.

Event type

This is a theatre event for children and adults to enjoy together. All young people under the age of 13 need to be accompanied by a paying adult and those aged 4 and above need a ticket to attend.

About Maddie Moate

Maddie Moate is a BAFTA-winning TV presenter and YouTube filmmaker passionate about science, wildlife, and travel.  She is the host of the BAFTA-nominated CBeebies TV series “Maddie's Do You Know?”, CBBC's "Show Me the Honey" and Magnolia Network's "Make Yourself At Home" on Discovery Plus.

​Maddie is one of the few family-focused “Edu-tubers” in the UK and has been creating curiosity fuelled science, travel, and wildlife videos for the past 10 years. Her YouTube channel was awarded "Best Kids Channel" by Kidscreen in 2022 and has amassed over 210 thousand subscribers and 50+ Million views. Away from her own channel, Maddie has fronted video series for BBC Earth Unplugged, English Heritage, Fully Charged, and LEGO.​

Timing

The doors will open at approximately 5.30pm, with a prompt start at 6.00pm.

Latecomers will be admitted into the gallery.

Covid guidelines

Face masks are no longer mandatory and wearing one in our Theatre and at other Ri events is at your discretion, however please do not attend the Ri if you are displaying Covid symptoms or, if you have tested, the result remains positive. Thank you for respecting other people and their choices, and for helping us keep all of our visitors and staff safe and well.

Accessibility

The event will take place on the first floor and there is step-free access from the street via lift.

The closest underground station is Green Park, which is step-free.

There is space at floor level in the theatre for wheelchair users.

Seating is usually unreserved for our events. If you and your group require seating reservations, please do let us know by emailing us at events@ri.ac.uk, and we’ll be more than happy to help.

Carers can receive a free ticket to an event by emailing events@ri.ac.uk.

Our theatre is equipped with an Audio Induction Loop.
