ShRIek: The spooky science of the paranormal

Join Steve McNeil and Michael Cutts for a uniquely creepy and mystifying evening, as they use Victorian scientific equipment to try to contact the spirit world…

Ri

Do you believe in ghosts? Steve McNeil (WiFi Wars) is in the strange situation of not believing in ghosts, but having seen one, twice. Earlier this year, he learned of the Ri’s strange historical relationship with the occult and paranormal from the Ri Demo Team’s Michael Cutts.

In this unique show, presented for the first time this Halloween in the Royal Institution's Theatre, the two men will tell the long-forgotten tales where science and the paranormal have intersected, both at the Ri and elsewhere.

They will attempt, with the help of real historical artifacts from the building's collection, to recreate the science that has led previous speakers to the conclusion that, sometimes, there may be more to this world (and building) than meets the eye...

Not for the faint of heart, this atmospheric and unnerving show will attempt to contact, communicate with, and reveal spirits, using the scientific tools available to those Victorian pioneers.

About the Speakers

Mike Cutts
by Paul Wilkinson

Michael Cutts is the Royal Institution’s Content Producer for Heritage and Demonstrations, bringing together scientific history, live performance, and spectacular stage science. He researches the Ri’s extraordinary legacy while designing and delivering demonstrations for lectures, television, the Faraday Theatre, and international audiences.

His background spans ecology, conservation and science communication: from studying Ecology at the University of East Anglia, to working on pink pigeon conservation with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and completing an MSc at the Natural History Museum and Imperial College, London.
Across his work, Michael is driven by making the science of everyday life feel vivid, memorable and accessible — transforming remarkable ideas from the past into live experiences that sparkle with curiosity, fizz with energy and, occasionally, go bang.

About the Speakers

Steve McNeil
by Steve McNeil

Steve McNeil is an award-winning actor and comedian, best known for the hit TV show he co-created, "Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit", for which he was a Team Captain. This evolved into the live theatrical show WiFi Wars, which he has now been performing for over a decade at locations as diverse as Glastonbury Festival, Arena Birmingham and Sydney Opera House.

As a creative consultant/producer/director he has worked on projects for many organisations, such as TikTok, Captain Morgan, Ubisoft and Pringles, while as a writer/journalist he has provided work for outlets including IGN, Time Out and Sky News. His non-fiction book about the history of videogames, "Hey! Listen!", was a best-seller upon release, and he has written or edited BAFTA's Games Awards script on four separate occasions.

Steve's passion is in taking complex ideas and commuting them in an entertaining, accessible way that allows even those who might not consider themselves fans of a topic to find the joy in the subject and its delivery.
