Science and snacks: Nano-sized medicine

We'll bring the science, you bring the snacks.

The rise of the Covid-19 pandemic gave way to ground-breaking advances in vaccine technologies. But do you know how these vaccines work? How do they get inside the cells of our body and become successful vaccines?

Join PhD researcher Hannah Cooke and dive into the nano-sized world of vaccine delivery systems. In this talk, you’ll discover what vaccine delivery systems are, why they’re important, and how these tiny tools are shaping the future of how we deliver medicines. Hannah will guide you through the inner workings of vaccines with interactive demos and activities and give an insight into the everyday life of a researcher.

Event type

This event is particularly suitable for ages 13+ and takes place in our Conversation room. It is a smaller and more intimate event where you explore research currently being undertaken by students across the UK.

Our cafe will be closed so please bring your snacks with you. Alcoholic drinks are not permitted at this event. Please do be mindful to not bring any foods that contain nuts.

By booking to attend events at the Royal Institution, you confirm that you have read and accept the Ri's event terms and conditions. You also agree to abide by our code of conduct, and help to create a great experience for yourself and your fellow participants.

Hannah is a final year PhD student in the Institute of Chemical Biology at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on developing new types of vaccine delivery systems, with the aim of improving how well vaccines are delivered to the cells in our body. Outside of her PhD, Hannah is a keen science communicator. Last year, she undertook a 3-month internship at The Royal Institution working with the demo team on the 2023 Christmas Lectures. She also wrote a shorter version of the show for international science festivals and the Ri’s family fun day.

Timing

The doors will open at approximately 4.00pm, with a prompt start at 4.30pm. The talk will be about 45 minutes, with a 15 minute Q&A at the end.
