How real is your reality? (family)

Discover how your brain builds reality—and why it sometimes gets it wrong.

Imagine your entire life, everything you see, hear, and feel, as a first-person movie. Your brain is the director, producer, and cinema all in one, and you’re the only person in the audience! But here’s the big question: is the movie your brain is showing you real? Is it a live recording or a Hollywood production? The things we see around us are real...most of the time. But sometimes, your brain likes to play tricks on you. Have you ever seen a face in the clouds or been fooled by an illusion or a magic trick? They aren’t just silly mistakes; they are amazing clues that show us how the brain creates our personal movie. Illusions teach us that your brain isn't just a camera recording the world.

In this fun, interactive talk, cognitive neuroscientist Pieter Barkema will explore mind-boggling illusions that will trick your eyes and boggle your mind. We'll look at how learning a new fact can instantly change the way you see something right in front of you, what illusions work even when you know the secret and real-life displays that show these mistakes are not just computer tricks.

This talk is for minds of all ages that are curious into a journey into your own head. Come and get to know yourself as well as scientists do!

This event is in partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

About the Speaker

Headshot of Pieter

As a brain scientist at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology, Pieter spends his days exploring one of the most fascinating questions in science: how the brain creates the reality we see and hear. His path to neuroscience, however, was far from linear. In high school, his favourite subject was economics, and he went on to study Chinese and Artificial Intelligence at university. Before turning to the brain, he even worked on the Google Assistant team as a Linguist.

Pieter found that working in AI often left deeper questions unanswered. Machines can be trained to perform tasks, but this rarely brings us closer to understanding the "why" behind intelligence. This curiosity eventually led him to neuroscience. He learned that we can discover the most about the brain by studying its quirks and even its mistakes, for example through studying mental health and illusions.
