The rapid spread of internet-connected devices has transformed our homes, cities and workplaces, bringing convenience, interconnectivity and innovation. However, alongside the positives, it has also created new opportunities for crime, surveillance, and exploitation.

Anna Maria-Mandalari explores how common 'Internet of Things' (IoT) devices such as smart speakers, cameras, wearables, and connected home systems can be misused, what this means for the public and how industry and policymakers are responding to these challenges.

Drawing on real-world research and investigations, she will discuss emerging security and privacy risks, highlight the technical and social challenges in detecting IoT threats, and outline practical steps we can take to build safer, more transparent connected technologies.
