Supercharged: The future of energy materials

Saiful Islam explores the latest in new battery materials, how this is impacting energy solutions, and what has changed in the 10 years since his famous CHRISTMAS LECTURES.

The supply of low carbon energy is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. Major breakthroughs in clean energy technologies require advances in new materials and a deeper understanding of these materials on the atomic scale. But how can we develop new crystalline materials to produce better batteries for electric cars and for storing energy from renewables such wind and solar?

In this talk, materials chemist and 2016 Christmas Lecturer Saiful Islam will explain how the use of atomistic modelling on supercomputers in close synergy with experimental studies can help to understand and design better materials for energy storage applications, particularly next-generation lithium-ion, sodium-ion and solid-state batteries. 10 years on from his CHRISTMAS LECTURES on energy, Saiful will navigate how the field has changed and what is coming next.

About the speaker - Saiful Islam

Saiful Islam

Saiful Islam is Professor of Materials Science at the University of Oxford and presented the 80th TV anniversary Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2016 on the theme of energy, which included a world record lemon battery. 

 
His research encompasses materials for batteries and solar cells, and he has been involved with Faraday Institution projects on lithium batteries.

 He has received several awards including the 2025 Royal Society of Chemistry Energy & Environment Prize, the 2022 Royal Society Hughes Medal and the 2020 American Chemical Society Award in Energy Chemistry.

Timing

Doors to the theatre will open at 6.45pm and the talk will begin at 7.00pm.

Accessibility

The event will take place on the first floor and there is step-free access from the street via lift.

The closest underground station is Green Park, which is step-free.

There is space at floor level in the theatre for wheelchair users.

Seating is usually unreserved for our events. If you and your group require seating reservations, please do let us know by emailing us at events@ri.ac.uk, and we’ll be more than happy to help.
