Join us in this interactive workshop all about probability

What are the chances? In this interactive workshop, you will dive into the mathematics of probability through a mystery story. You'll be using logic, reasoning, and increasingly powerful mathematical tools to work out whodunit.

Working in groups, you will explore how to calculate and compare probabilities, discover why our instincts about chance so often lead us astray, and find out how mathematicians use probability to make sense of a world where things are much less than certain.

For children who have just completed Years 7, 8 or 9 this term - please book based on your child’s current/most recent school year, not their new year group from September. This typically corresponds to children aged around 11–14 years old. We reserve the right to refund or deny entry to those who are not in the correct year group.

Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. Please also note that Eventbrite adds a small booking fee to the amount paid for each ticket option.

About speaker

Vanessa is a PhD researcher in Statistical Machine Learning at Imperial College London, where she develops new methods for predicting ocean surface currents. She is also a Guest Teacher in Mathematics at the London School of Economics.

In addition to her teacher and researcher hats, she also wears the hat of Maths & Science Communicator and shares science and mathematics through live talks and workshops, writing, and performance, for audiences from primary school children to Sixth Formers and beyond.

Her approach is what one interviewer called "mathematics by stealth", leading with wonder and whimsy - by the time people realise they have been doing mathematics, they are already enjoying it. She believes that mathematics is the closest thing we have to magic, and designs everything she does to help others experience that for themselves.

About our workshops

Holiday workshops at the Royal Institution give students a hands-on experience of STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, maths) beyond what they learn at school. Working in groups or pairs, students will get hands-on to complete activities, challenges or projects which help them look deeper at the subject they are exploring. These workshops don’t follow the school curriculum but instead show students the many real world uses of STEM topics, expanding their horizons beyond the classroom to see the amazing possibilities science can give you. Sessions are led by experts from across industry and academia who will share with the students their excitement and knowledge of their areas of expertise.
