Holiday workshops: Engineering and Machines (Year 3 and 4)

Join this hands-on workshop exploring machines and engineering

Get ready to build, test and investigate your way through the six simple machines that have powered human engineering for thousands of years! In this hands-on workshop, participants will construct and investigate every single machine - from inclined planes and pulleys to levers and wheels and axles - discovering the forces and physics behind each one as we build.
Along the way they'll meet the engineers who used them, from Archimedes to the present day, and see how these deceptively simple ideas have powered some of humanity's greatest inventions.   While exploring wheels and axels, you'll also build our own cars to take home.

At the end, you'll combine everything you have learnt to build a working winch - a compound machine that combines several of the principles we've explored - and put it to the test with a real load.

No prior engineering experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in.

For children who have just completed Years 3 or 4 this term - please book based on your child’s current/most recent school year, not their new year group from September. This typically corresponds to children aged around 7–9 years old. We reserve the right to refund or deny entry to those who are not in the correct year group.

Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. Please also note that Eventbrite adds a small booking fee to the amount paid for each ticket option.

About the speaker

Inventors & Makers is a multi-award-winning STEM education company founded and run entirely by qualified teachers and STEM specialists. We deliver hands-on science, technology, engineering and maths workshops to thousands of children across the UK every year - in schools, nurseries and holiday settings.
We're proud to be repeatedly booked by the schools and settings we work with, trusted for our ability to make complex engineering and scientific concepts genuinely accessible, practical, exciting and memorable for children of all ages. Every workshop we deliver combines rigorous educational foundations with the kind of hands-on, joyful learning that keeps children engaged from start to finish.

About our workshops

Holiday workshops at the Royal Institution give students a hands-on experience of STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, maths) beyond what they learn at school. Working in groups or pairs, students will get hands-on to complete activities, challenges or projects which help them look deeper at the subject they are exploring. These workshops don’t follow the school curriculum but instead show students the many real world uses of STEM topics, expanding their horizons beyond the classroom to see the amazing possibilities science can give you. Sessions are led by experts from across industry and academia who will share with the students their excitement and knowledge of their areas of expertise.
