Holiday workshops: Maths, maps, and adventures (Year 3 and 4)

Explore the surprising connections between maths, maps and problem-solving in this holiday workshop.

Could a mathematical theorem really need colouring pencils to solve? And how can maths help us design and understand maps? Through creative activities and challenges, participants will discover how mathematicians have used colour to solve problems like map-making—finding the most efficient ways to divide regions without overlap.

Travel back in time and explore how people used maths thousands of years ago in this engaging workshop. Did ancient civilisations understand ideas like prime numbers? Why does counting in fives feel so natural? And what symbols did they use to record their discoveries?

Through hands-on activities and discussion, you’ll uncover some of the most fascinating and surprising number systems from the past—and see how these early ideas still shape the way we use maths today.

For children who have just completed Years 3 or 4 this term - please book based on your child’s current/most recent school year, not their new year group from September. This typically corresponds to children aged around 7–9 years old. We reserve the right to refund or deny entry to those who are not in the correct year group.

Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. Please also note that Eventbrite adds a small booking fee to the amount paid for each ticket option.

About the speaker

Ioanna (possible pronunciation Yo-Anna) is a mathematics educator who finds story telling a fascinating way to communicate mathematical ideas from the times they were emerging. Turning to stories of the past, with lively characters full of resilience and determination gives a rather comprehensive glimpse of what maths has been doing for us possibly ever since early humans started counting. Ioanna has been using these ideas in her teaching, masterclasses and workshops. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, a Chartered Mathematics Teacher and author of “Mathematical Adventures!” and “Peculiar Deaths of Famous Mathematicians”.

About our workshops

Holiday workshops at the Royal Institution give students a hands-on experience of STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, maths) beyond what they learn at school. Working in groups or pairs, students will get hands-on to complete activities, challenges or projects which help them look deeper at the subject they are exploring. These workshops don’t follow the school curriculum but instead show students the many real world uses of STEM topics, expanding their horizons beyond the classroom to see the amazing possibilities science can give you. Sessions are led by experts from across industry and academia who will share with the students their excitement and knowledge of their areas of expertise.
