Frank De Jonghe

Elected Trustee - 2025

Frank De Jonghe obtained his PhD in Physics from the Katholieke University of Leuven in 1994, working in the field of theoretical high energy physics. He is a visiting professor at the University of Ghent, Belgium since 2004, where he teaches a course on financial mathematics and derivative pricing.

After brief stints at Euroclear in internal audit, and as an equity portfolio manager at Bank Brussel Lambert (now ING), he joined Deloitte Belgium in 1999,  where he became partner in 2004. Frank moved to EY Belgium in 2011 and since 2021 he is working for EY in London. Frank works in the entire field of risk management in financial institutions, but focuses on the proper use of mathematical models in the financial industry, be it for risk management or financial statements purposes. This includes in depth model audits in view of relevant regulations.

Since  2018, Frank has been building on this model risk management expertise to shape EY’s (and its clients’) thinking on responsible and trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence. He believes that with proper understanding and due caution, we can avoid a Luddite backlash, and he aims to contribute to reaping the benefits of this revolution for us all by working on AI risk management.

During a life event, I rediscovered my inner scientist, finding consolation in the beauty and harmony of scientific narratives, challenges and insights. Science brings me the peace of mind that others find in music, poetry, art.

The Ri is relentlessly creating that feeling of wonder and awe, particularly also helping kids and young adults discover the beauty of science (not to mention the value for society). The roster of speakers at the Ri’s events, week in, week out is evidence that active scientists relish the opportunity to engage with this audience. Being able to do so on the very spot where many of greatest of science stood before them, is a tangible continuation of a long tradition and in itself a visualisation of the progress of scientific insight.
