Henry Bence Jones was a physician who studied the aspects of chemistry in pathology and medicine and also gave several courses of lectures at the Ri. As well as holding the post of Secretary of the Royal Institution, he was Faraday's friend and first biographer.

Bence Jones was born in Suffolk and attended Harrow School before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1836 he moved to London to study medicine at St George’s Hospital and chemistry at University College. In 1841 he worked with Justus Liebig at the University of Giessen. From 1845 he became Assistant Physician at St George’s and the following year Full Physician which he held until 1862.
