Summer Schools: Patterns and predictions (age 13–15)

In this workshop for 13–15 year-olds, students will explore patterns: how to spot them, describe them and use them to make predictions.

Event description

This interactive session with Jenny Sharp is all about finding patterns, describing patterns mathematically, making predictions and testing them.

A good mathematician can spot patterns in numbers, shapes, words and more. The question that they then ask is ‘Can I find a way to describe this pattern mathematically?’

Mathematicians can also make predictions as to what might come next based on the patterns that they have found. Once they have made those predictions, mathematicians need to make sure that the pattern works for all possible cases – can the pattern be proved, or is it just a conjecture that seems to work?

About the speaker

Jenny Sharp works at Plymouth University. As well as teaching on the undergraduate programmes, she runs a very busy Mathematics Enrichment Programme for Schools throughout Devon and Cornwall, running workshops for pupils and their teachers from Year 5 through to Year 10.

Jenny is a regular Ri Mathematics Masterclass speaker and has delivered Masterclasses on a wide range of topics.

Please note

This workshop is strictly for 13–15 year-olds and will include a 45 minute supervised lunch break. Students will not be able to leave the building at lunch time unless permission is given at the time of booking. Students should bring lunch and a drink, pens, pencils and a calculator.

Discounted tickets are available to Ri Members. Find out more about how to join.

Mathematics Summer School workshops are based on Ri Masterclasses. Students who have attended a Masterclass series which included a session on a similar topic may have already seen some of the content in this workshop. Please contact us on with any questions.

Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.

Workshops are on the first floor of our building, for which there is step-free access from the street via lift.

The closest underground station is Green Park, which is step-free.

Seating is usually unreserved for our events. If you and your group require seating reservations, or if you have any other questions, please do let us know by email and we’ll be more than happy to help. Email:
