Get hands-on with the 2019 CHRISTMAS LECTURES at this season’s Family Fun Day.
Drop in for an action-packed day of talks, demonstrations and experiments all exploring the curious and unexpected maths that governs our world.
We will be exploring how life’s hidden numbers can help us all make better choices, sort fact from fiction, and lead happier lives. From suspicious statistics to engineering meltdowns get hands on with maths, physics, engineering and more.
Family Fun Day activities are particularly well suited for 7–12-year olds, though older and younger siblings are also very welcome. All under 18-year olds must be accompanied by an adult. Ri Young Members enjoy Family Fun Days for free, but don't forget to book tickets before taking part on the day.
All activities and talks run throughout the day, so you do not need to arrive at 11.00am. There is sometimes a queue when we first open, so you might find it easier to arrive a little later, and you will still have time to see all the talks and try out all the activities.
This event is generously supported by our 2019 Christmas Lectures sponsors.
Mike Cutts: Secrets and Lies - Inside the CHRISTMAS LECTURES
11.20am, 1.15pm, 3.15pm; 30mins
The CHRISTMAS LECTURES are famous for their exciting and inventive use of demonstrations to bring science to life. Join the Ri's science content producer Mike Cutts on a whistle stop of the 2019 lectures, with some of his favourite demos from this year as well as a few surprises from lectures past!
Bobby Seagull: The life-changing magic of numbers
12.15pm and 2.15pm; 30mins
Once you know how to see them, numbers are all around us – buried in the dimensions of buildings and encoding the data on our favourite gadgets. They’re a beautiful system of patterns and codes, but also an essential tool that can guide our daily decisions, change our behaviour, and even predict the future—if we can just learn how to use them right. Join Bobby Seagull as he illuminates the world of numbers and brings his infectious enthusiasm to everything from the mystery of magic numbers and the improbability of probability.
Mike Cutts is the Science Content Developer here at the Ri, and is responsible for helping design, build and test all of the demos you see on the CHRISTMAS LECTURES and more!
Bobby Seagull became a cult star as a contestant on University Challenge in 2017. He is now an obsessive quiz enthusiast, secondary school maths teacher, a doctorate student researching maths anxiety at Cambridge University and a long-suffering West Ham fan.
