In maths, the Navier-Stokes equations successfully model the flow of every fluid on Earth, but yet we know so little about them.

There is currently a $1-million prize for anyone that can get to the bottom of their mystery.

In this talk Tom Crawford explores his favourite equations and explains why we may never fully understand them.

Tom Crawford is a tutor at St Hugh’s College, St Edmund Hall and St John’s College at the University of Oxford where he teaches maths to the first and second year undergraduates. He also runs this award-winning website and associated social media profiles on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube @tomrocksmaths. Current partners include the BBC, the European Mathematical Society, the Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Oxplore – Oxford University’s digital outreach portal.

Tom completed his PhD in applied maths at the University of Cambridge in 2016, where he conducted experiments looking at where river water goes when it enters the ocean. Before that, Tom spent four years studying maths at the University of Oxford and was recently interviewed by the Oxford Alumni Voices podcast about his time there.

When not misbehaving with numbers, Tom can be found playing football, snowboarding and pretending he’s a rockstar. He currently has 6 maths-themed tattoos including the Navier-Stokes equations, the platonic solids and the first 100 digits of the number e…
