Event description

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, this event has been cancelled. All attendees will be contacted to offer a full refund.

This workshop is designed for those children who have special educational needs that means they could not attend the standard LYSC workshops. The workshop will be run flexibly to accommodate for differing needs with a smaller number of attendees and a higher staff to child ratio. For this workshop there will be a maximum of 12 attendees and parents and guardians are most welcome to accompany their children in the workshop (a free carer ticket is available with each child ticket- please just book for the child). Equally if they feel their child would benefit from attending on their own they are welcome to do that also.

The workshop will follow a similar pattern to our Standard ‘Extract your own DNA’ workshop, with extra time allowed. We will also endeavour to be especially sensitive to noise and other sensory related issues. Please note that this workshop does involve extraction of DNA via a mouth wash so if your child has sensory issues that might be triggered by this, this workshop might not be suitable for them.

This workshop will run 12.30-3.30pm to allow for extra time, however may not take the full 3 hours. We have no formal break scheduled but will work with the participants needs to have a break of up to half an hour within this time.

We have widened the age group for this workshop to accommodate as many children as possible, but it is intended as a guide. If your child is outside of this range but would still like to attend, please do call or e-mail us and we can discuss individual circumstances. Please also do feel free to contact us with any questions.

Students will extract their own DNA and walk away with a small piece of it in a necklace for them to wear.

Working in a real science lab and using their own cheek cells, students will extract their DNA using enzymes and use ethanol to separate it from the solution, ready to transfer into their own necklace.

This workshop is a great early introduction to enzymes and DNA.
