‘For Your Inspiration’ is back for Spring! These events aim to give young people a hands-on look at different areas of science, and talk directly to people working in them. This season, we have partnered with the Intensive Care Society, celebrating the society’s 50th anniversary by looking at the exciting medical specialty of intensive care.
From using exciting and advanced technology to keep people alive, to working in a big team of specialists to get people back on their feet after life-threatening illness, there is a huge range of scientific topics and career options to explore.
Hear from former Christmas Lecturer Hugh Montgomery, and try out exciting activities exploring this diverse area. Activities and demonstrations will be run by the Ri, Intensive Care Society members and a number of other companies and organisations giving you the chance to meet and talk to experts and specialists as well as people just starting out in this field.
This event is for ages 13+.
This event is free for Ri Young Members 13 and over. For those younger than this, please see our Family Fun Days.
Dr Hugh Montgomery is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London (UCL), where he also directs the Centre for Human Health and Performance.
Montgomery is also a geneticist. He discovered the first 'gene for human fitness' - one which also changes the chance of surviving critical illness by five-fold. His research looks into why one person may live and one may die when they look almost identical and suffer the same disease. Montgomery is interested in whether survivors are born, or made. Hugh Montgomery still spends 25% of his time working in a North London Intensive Care Unit.
Hugh presented the 2007 CHRISTMAS LECTURES on the subject back from the brink: the science of survival.
The doors will open at approximately 1.30pm, with a prompt start at 2.00pm. There will be time for questions after the talk. After the talk finishes at 3.15pm there will be hands on activities around the building until 5.00pm
Benefit from free and better than half-price tickets, special offers and access to the CHRISTMAS LECTURES ticket ballot.
