The rainbow is a natural phenomenon which has enthralled mankind for thousands of years, and one which contains many interesting things you might not have seen before.
Join Alan Davies to explore rainbows, experiment with refraction and reflection, and discover the interesting science and mathematics behind this multi-coloured marvel.
Alan Davies is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Hertfordshire where his teaching and research has been in numerical applied mathematics. In 2006 he retired from his position as Head of Department and now concentrates on outreach activities.
Alan has, for more than 20 years, had a very close association with Ri Mathematics Masterclass series in Hertfordshire, London and elsewhere. He presents a wide variety of topics to young people of all ages, from primary through secondary into higher education, and gives public lectures to general audiences on popular applications of mathematics and physics.
Alan believes that it is possible to introduce so-called advanced topics to young people of any age: it’s not the topic; it’s the method of delivery.
This workshop is strictly for 7–9 year-olds. There will be a short break during the workshop and a drink and a small snack will be provided. Students should bring their own snack if they have any allergies.
Discounted tickets are available to Ri Members. Find out more about how to join.
The Mathematics Summer School workshops are based on Ri Mathematics Masterclasses. Students who have attended a Masterclass series which included a session on a similar topic may have already seen some of the content in this workshop. Please contact us on email@example.com with any questions.
Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.
Workshops are on the first floor of our building, for which there is step-free access from the street via lift.
The closest underground station is Green Park, which is step-free.
Seating is usually unreserved for our events. If you and your group require seating reservations, or if you have any other questions, please do let us know by email and we’ll be more than happy to help. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Potential Trust may be able to offer financial assistance to enable children to participate in Ri events and activities if this would otherwise be difficult. Please contact Anna Comino-James preferably via telephone on +44 (0)1844 351666, or at their email address email@example.com.
