Event description

Anamorphosis is a technique for transforming pictures, including making flat pictures ‘jump’ into 3D when viewed from the correct place, or making pictures look flat when they are drawn on 3D objects.

In this workshop with Alan Davies, we will explore the mathematics of making these transformations and have a go at producing our own anamorphic art.

Anamorphosis techniques can be seen on street art, adverts on football pitches and even famous paintings, which use it to make the work come alive.

About the speaker

Alan Davies is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Hertfordshire where his teaching and research has been in numerical applied mathematics. In 2006 he retired from his position as Head of Department and now concentrates on outreach activities.

Alan has, for more than 20 years, had a very close association with Ri Mathematics Masterclass series in Hertfordshire, London and elsewhere. He presents a wide variety of topics to young people of all ages, from primary through secondary into higher education, and gives public lectures to general audiences on popular applications of mathematics and physics.

Alan believes that it is possible to introduce so-called advanced topics to young people of any age: it’s not the topic; it’s the method of delivery.

Please note

Please note, this workshop is strictly for 10-12 year-olds. There will be a short break during the workshop and a drink and a small snack will be provided. Students should bring their own snack if they have any allergies.
