Event description

Please note, this is a rescheduled event previously advertised as running on Sunday 28 April.

At least 15 million tickets are sold every week in the National Lottery Lotto draw, but is it worth buying a ticket? In this workshop we ask the questions: what does mathematics say about the lottery? Is it worth playing? Can we increase our chances of getting lucky? Zoe Griffiths will help participants answer these questions by exploring the mathematics of combinations, Pascal’s Triangle and probability in an interactive and fun way.

This workshop is aimed at 7–12 year olds with their families, but older students and adults are welcome. There must be at least one paying adult attending with each booking. Please note, this event is repeated at 1:30pm on the same day.

About the Speaker

Zoe Griffiths thinks mathematics is something definitely worth getting excited about, and enjoys creating and delivering workshops that capture young people’s imagination for the subject. Zoe works for Think Maths, presenting engaging and inspiring maths talks and workshops in schools. Prior to this she was the Primary Mathematics Masterclass coordinator here at the Ri making and delivering Masterclasses across the network, and before that worked as a secondary mathematics teacher for four years, after completing a PGCE in Mathematics Education at Oxford University, where she first developed her love for the communication of mathematics. When not thinking about mathematics, Zoe enjoys walking, playing football and learning to bake.

Please note

There must be at least one adult attending with each booking.

This Family Masterclass is based on our Mathematics Masterclasses, and is an opportunity for children and adults to work together, taking a hands-on approach to exploring different topics. Royal Institution Masterclasses inspire young people to experience the creativity, practice and relevance of mathematics, allowing them to explore the diverse ideas and applications within this far-reaching subject.
