Acoustics play an enormous role in our society and we are never far from an acoustic device. There are so many applications in our world from loudspeakers to automotive exhausts, each of which have very different design outcomes. In this workshop with Bob Cresswell, students will study two simple concepts that underpin modern acoustic theories–loudspeakers and Helmholtz resonators. Through a series of practical and theoretical activities students will gain an appreciation of the basic theories behind each concept and will construct a working model using household materials, even playing music through the loudspeaker. Students should gain a better understanding of these concepts, as well as how engineering is a practical and fun application of physics and mathematics.
Bob Cresswell spent 24 years in the Royal Air Force as a communications and radar technician from which he received an HND in electronics engineering plus a BSc in Mathematics from the Open University. After gaining a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics he spent seven successful years teaching mathematics at Berwick Academy, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Today Bob manages the Royal Institution’s masterclass programme.
This workshop is strictly for 10–12 year–olds. There will be a short break during the workshop and a drink and a small snack will be provided. Students should bring their own snack if they have any allergies.
This workshop is based on an Ri Engineering Masterclass. Students who have attended a Masterclass series which included a session on a similar topic may have already seen some of the content in this workshop. Please contact us on summerschools@ri.ac.uk with any questions.
Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least one week (seven calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.
