Draw, tile and colour Islamic Geometric Patterns: Using a pencil, compass and straightedge, lines and circles are drawn to create an underlying grid. From this, patterns can be outlined, repeated and brought to life with colour. These patterns have existed for centuries and can be found in architecture across the Islamic Lands from the tiled fountains in Morocco, the wooden Mamluk Minbars in Cairo, the Nasrid Palace in the Alhambra, the Blue Mosque in Turkey, the Paradise Gardens in Isfahan, Iran and the Mausoleums of Mughal India to name just a few!
This workshop is aimed at 7–12 year olds with their families, but older students and adults are welcome. There must be at least one paying adult attending with each booking. Please note, this event is repeated at 1:30pm on the same day.
About the Speaker
By tapping into her 12 years secondary school maths teaching experience, Samira Mian has been able to share her passion for the compass and straightedge constructions of Islamic Geometric Patterns in the UK, abroad and online over the past 5 years. She regularly leads workshops for adults at Cass Art Art Spaces in Islington, Kingston, Manchester, as well as Harrow Arts Centre and SOAS University. For those who can’t make these workshops, she has two online courses with over 2000 students in 90 countries as well as plenty of content via social media platforms and YouTube. Being part of a wider Islamic Arts community has taken her to teach abroad at Kids and Adults workshops in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Canada.
