She attended the City of London School for Girls and studied at Newnham College, Cambridge and at Harvard University where she received her PhD. She was appointed Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham, a position that she held until 1965 when she moved to the University of Sussex. In 1980 she was appointed Professor of Philosophy and Psychology and in 1987 was the founding Dean of the School of Cognitive Sciences. Her current title is Research Professor of Cognitive Science and her main research centres on artificial intelligence and cognitive science including creativity and art.
