New leadership of the Ri

Chris Rofe, Chief Executive of the Ri, steps down after eight years of success in expanding the charity’s global reach, building a loyal community of supporters and securing a strong financial position for future growth.

A message from Sir Richard Sykes FRS, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

The Royal Institution’s mission is to harness science for the maximum benefit of society. To achieve this, today we have the capacity and capability to deliver a diverse and respected range of education programmes which encourages millions of people of all ages and nationalities, and from all walks of life, to question, debate and ponder the wonders and applications of science.

Over the last eight years, our Chief Executive Chris Rofe has shown remarkable commitment, professionalism and leadership in steering our charity to reach such a pivotal point in our history. He has successfully delivered against a difficult turnaround brief, achieved the repayment of our debt and provided us with a robust financial foundation to now grow from. He has led us through a period of significant change and he has enhanced Ri governance, established a strong management team, and most importantly, with the help of the whole Ri community, enabled our education programmes to grow from strength to strength.

On behalf of our trustees, staff, patrons, members and supporters, I would like to publicly thank Chris for his dedication in securing such a strong foundation for the Ri and we wish him every success for the future.

I’m proud to say that thanks to this foundation, we now have even bigger ambitions to make the Ri a greater resource of inspiration and excellence than ever before. It is extremely heartening to see how many people, organisations and companies place real value on the benefits of the Royal Institution’s charitable activities and want to support our future.

The trustees are committed to finding a successor to Chris to maintain the momentum the Ri has developed under his leadership and to further raise our profile across the globe. A search for a suitable highly respected leader of the Ri is now underway and it is our hope that an appointment can be announced early in 2017.

A message from Chris Rofe, Chief Executive

I have been privileged to work with a wonderful team of dedicated staff and trustees over the last eight years, and to benefit from the enthusiasm and commitment of the Ri’s thousands of engaged and loyal patrons, members and supporters. This community provides extraordinary and invaluable input to help ensure the excellence of the Ri’s education and communication programmes.

Having established financial stability and completed important foundation work for a new strategy, I believe this is an exciting time for a new leader to join the Ri team and help further enhance its reputation as a leader in science communication. The Ri now has the environment, confidence and appetite for future growth and is in an ideal position from which to build its visibility, influence and impact across the globe.

I look forward to seeing the next chapter in the Ri’s long history develop and I will continue to enjoy being part of the Ri community as a committed member and supporter.
