Location: Albemarle St, London, W1 4BS with some remote working

Contract type: Permanent, part-time (21 hours a week) - flexible work patterns considered

Salary: £56 to £60k per annum, pro-rata, plus benefits

Through our packed event programme, our UK schools outreach and social impact initiatives, and our global digital reach including almost 1.5m YouTube subscribers we achieve our mission by connecting people with scientists to explore science together.

We talk, and listen, to the public. We help scientists talk, and listen, to the public. We develop critical thinking and a spirit of exploration in young people through our educational work.

In our historic Grade I listed building in Mayfair, discoveries were made that literally changed the world. Today it is a busy, multi-purpose building which acts as base for the Ri team (approx. 60) and tenants (approx.100) and our science communication activities as well as a vibrant event space for private and corporate events.

About the role

Are you an experienced and qualified finance professional, who can lead our small finance team and collaborate across the Ri to deliver accurate and clear financial information to support decision making? This is an exciting time to join the Ri and lead the finance function. We recently launched a new 5-year strategy and are planning for growth over the next few years. We need an organised and dynamic leader to develop the finance team, systems and reporting to support this growth.

This is a permanent part-time position for 3 days a week (flexible work patterns considered).

About You

You will be a proven charity financial leader with strong management and financial accounting skills to influence at all levels across the Ri. You will be responsible for finance operations, have the opportunity to implement a new accounting system, ensure statutory and regulatory compliance, manage financial risk and lead the budgeting and reporting process. You will ensure the Ri’s assets are controlled, especially the investment portfolio and provide robust advice on all commercial decisions. With support from a Finance Manager and Finance Business Partner, you will also implement the systems and processes to enable the finance team to evolve and effectively support the delivery of our ambitious strategy.

Do you have:

  • Experience of working in a senior finance role with experience in producing financial and management accounts and in running a finance and accounting function
  • Experience of working in a charity or social enterprise with experience of restricted charity funds, Charities SORP, donor accounting, Charities VAT
  • Ability to use a range of technical financial skills to improve systems, processes and performance  
  • Skilled in developing relationships and influencing at all levels
  • Experience of building, developing and being part of a high performing team
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to provide sound advice, challenge and support
  • The ability to explain complex financial information making it accessible to all
  • A collaborative approach that nurtures effective partnership across at all levels
  • A professional qualification in Accountancy (i.e. CCAB or equivalent)
