In this hands-on Engineering workshop with Ri Science Presenter Dan Plane, families will be working in a teams, to design and then construct a shelter large enough for the whole team to get into at the same time, using one simple resource: newspaper. We will be using a hand operated STIXX machine to turn six sheets of newspaper into a solid structural rod, then join the rods together with re-usable cable ties to build their structures. This workshop will be a great test of your engineering skills, design and creativity and a fantastic opportunity to design and build a large shelter using a simple, recyclable resource: newspaper!
This workshop is aimed at 7–12 year olds with their families, but older students and adults are welcome. There must be at least one paying adult attending with each booking.
Dan Plane is a Science in Schools presenter for the Royal Institution and has worked in education for nearly 20 years. He's been a science communicator for the last 8 and his interest in all areas of science is ever growing. He especially enjoys bringing fun and excitement to the demonstrations he has been creating and performing in science centres and schools across the UK.
Dan is all about getting everyone, kids and adults alike, to explore the past, present, and future of science, and is especially proud to be a part of the rich history of science communication here at the Ri.
There must be at least one adult attending with each booking.
This Family Masterclass is based on our Engineering Masterclasses, and is an opportunity for children and adults to work together, taking a hands-on approach to exploring different topics. Royal Institution Masterclasses inspire young people to experience the creativity, practice and relevance of mathematics, allowing them to explore the diverse ideas and applications within this far-reaching subject.
Discounted tickets are available to Members of the Ri.
