Event description

Mathematics and art have a long historical relationship, from Leonardo da Vinci's use of the golden ratio in his sculptures and painting, to the use of symmetries in Islamic art.

In this session students will learn about the graphical artist MCEscher and his work with optical illusions and tessellations.

Students will learn about regular and semi-regular tessellations and will work together to answer the big question: which regular polygons will tessellate.

About the speaker

Charlotte Webb works for the Open University as a Lecturer in Mathematics Education and is also a mathematical problem solving tutor at the University of Bedfordshire. She has previously worked as a secondary mathematics teacher in Bristol, Oxford and Madrid.

Charlotte loves mathematics and art, particularly mathematical architecture such as the Alhambra in Granada. Outside of work, she has a pet dachshund called Ronnie, and has travelled around Europe, America, Asia and Australasia.
