This workshop gives an introduction to pH, emulsification, ionic chemistry. It is also a great workshop to focus on fair testing and experimental design. Students will perform their own experiments on a commercial shampoo, measuring the viscosity, foamability, pH and learning about its emulsifying properties.
A key part of this workshop is to give students the chance to think about the design and validity of scientific experiments. Using their results, students can then compare their own shampoo to the commercial product. They will produce a ‘standard’ product then have the opportunity to adjust the recipe according to what properties they liked the most about the shampoo.
At the end of the workshop the students will be able to take home their final product. We encourage the students to think about all aspects of producing a good product through experimentation.
This workshop is strictly for 10-12 year olds only.
