The best mathematicians make the best codebreakers. They have logical minds, they can stick at a task, see patterns and follow algorithms. Jenny Sharp will explore codes and ciphers from the last 2000 years in this hands–on session. Students will learn how to create codes and ciphers to send secret messages and how they can be broken.
Jenny Sharp works at Plymouth University. As well as teaching on the undergraduate programmes, she runs a very busy Mathematics Enrichment Programme for Schools throughout Devon and Cornwall, running workshops for pupils and their teachers from year 5 through to year 10. She is a regular Ri Mathematics Masterclass speaker and has delivered masterclasses on a wide range of topics.
This workshop is strictly for 7–9 year-olds. There will be a short break during the workshop and a drink and a small snack will be provided. Students should bring their own snack if they have any allergies.
Mathematics Summer School workshops are based on Ri Masterclasses. Students who have attended a Masterclass series which included a session on a similar topic may have already seen some of the content in this workshop. Please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
