He attended Eton College, Le Rosey, Switzerland, and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. From 1955 he served in the Royal Scots Greys and was later on the staff at GOC Eastern Command, Hounslow. He was promoted Major in 1967, Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1972, Major General in 1983 and Field Marshall in 1993.

He is chairman or president of a large number of organisations including the All-England Lawn Tennis Club from 1969, the Engineering Council from 1989 and was President of the British Association in 1981.
