What vibrations are, how they are propagated, and why they are important to our understanding of the properties of matter.
Lawrence Bragg first describes a simple vibration, followed by a reconstruction of Galileo’s original observation. Vibrations in a column of air, and how vibrations can be maintained are then described and shown in a series of fascinating demonstrations. Bragg continues, describing and illustrating the vibration of bodies in two dimensions, leading on to a demonstration with a Chladni Plate of complex vibration patterns. Lawrence begins and ends the film by stressing the inter-relationship of vibrations and waves.
