programme for maths

The Royal Institution organises and sponsors a programme of masterclasses and other mathematical activities throughout the country to engage, encourage and inspire both primary and secondary students in the art and practice of mathematics and to support their teachers. The Ri is keen to develop and extend this programme and has limited funds to foster local initiatives.

In 1998, the Ri and the University of Cambridge established the Primary Mathematics Programme to develop a network of masterclasses, maths clubs and other enrichment activities for primary students. Providing support and resources for teachers and working on the primary-secondary interface are integral parts of the programme.

Launched in January 1981, the Secondary Mathematics Masterclasses form a UK-wide network of around 60 series of classes aimed at Year 8 or Year 9 students (12 to 14 year olds). They are organised regionally, mainly by local groups of volunteers, based at universities, schools or LEAs. Some of the groups also organise masterclasses and other activities for older students.
The Ri is piloting Mathematics Masterclasses for older students and Science Masterclasses for Year 9 students. One-off masterclasses and workshops for teachers can also be arranged. For details, please contact Dr Vinay Kathotia, Clothworkers' Fellow in Mathematics, on 020 7670 2906 or vinay@ri.ac.uk.
