About

Our Secondary Masterclasses are designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics. The highly interactive sessions introduce students to aspects or applications of maths which are not usually covered in the school curriculum.

Topics cover a huge range of mathematical ideas, including diverse applications such as art, cryptography, programming, modelling and knot theory.

Masterclass programmes are typically arranged in series of six to ten classes, with one class running for about two and a half hours. Students are nominated by their schools to attend the whole series, with each session being given by a different speaker on their chosen topic.

Speakers are chosen for their ability to share their insight and enthusiasm for the subject. Students get the opportunity to explore the subject for themselves within each class, either individually or in small groups, with help being on hand if needed. Teachers are especially encouraged to participate in this part of the class.

Read a summary of our evaluation (pdf) by the CEM centre at Durham University. If you wish to read the comprehensive report please email us on masterclasses@ri.ac.uk.

The network

The Masterclasses are organised regionally, mainly by independent groups of local volunteers. Our Secondary Mathematics Masterclass network collectively runs over 65 series each year all around the UK, with new groups starting every year. Each group organises one or more series, usually for 13 to 14 year olds. Classes are typically held on Saturday mornings during term time. We also have national networks of Primary Mathematics Masterclasses, Secondary Engineering Masterclasses and Secondary Computer Science Masterclasses.

During the summer term, the Ri invites all of that year's participants to one of several special follow-up Masterclass Celebration events around the country.

Get involved

We are always keen to support new groups, so if you are interested in helping to set up a series in your area you can find out more about becoming an organiser or get in touch: 020 7670 2915 or masterclasses@ri.ac.uk.
