About

The Engineering Masterclasses introduce young people to the far-reaching subject of engineering, allowing them to gain insight into the creativity, practice and relevance of this diverse discipline. A Masterclass series typically contains six Saturday morning sessions, each of which is presented by a practising engineer from industry or academia. Each week students will work on a practical project focusing on a different topic, learning the theory underpinning the subject and experiencing how science and maths connect to real-life engineering challenges. Regional Masterclass organisers invite local schools to nominate a few of their brightest and most enthusiastic Year 9 (age 13-14) students to attend the whole series.

Masterclass students have the opportunity to explore a range of cutting edge engineering subjects, from hip joints and crash testing to rockets and robots. The projects, often of a design/build/test nature, focus on developing solutions to real-life problems and will channel their creative thinking in order to solve engineering challenges. The students will have an opportunity to discuss the wider societal, environmental and ethical implications involved with each subject. The range of topics will give the students a wide introduction to engineering and will help highlight the importance of their school STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.

The network

Started in 2012, the Royal Institution Engineering Masterclass network extends across much of England and is rapidly expanding each year. This builds on the success of the Engineering Masterclasses pilot in London in 2008, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Masterclasses are organised regionally, mainly by independent groups of local volunteers, with around 15 series taking place this year. We also have national networks of Primary Mathematics, Secondary Mathematics and Computer Science Masterclasses.

As with our Mathematics Masterclasses, we intend to have a UK-wide network of Engineering Masterclasses and are working with new local partners each year to achieve this goal.

Get involved

There are lots of ways to get involved in the Engineering Masterclasses; for more details and contacts in your area, please get in touch. We are always looking to expand into new areas.

We currently have a particular focus on setting up new Engineering Masterclass series in the Newcastle and the North East following a grant from the Reece Foundation in 2013. We have two series running in Newcastle in autumn 2014 and are actively seeking additional academic and industry centres to host Masterclass series in the North East, as well as additional local speakers from industry and academia. Please let us know if you would like to get involved.
