News from across the network of secondary mathematics Masterclasses in Autumn 2013.
Our secondary mathematics network has been busy once again this term, with new series in Worcester and Wandsworth and the re-starting of the Sussex series. These have all been extremely successful, with all series full and very positive feedback from students. For an article on the Worcestershire series, please download the document on the right.
Our Year 10 maths circle at Imperial College was incredibly over-subscribed this year with around 100 students on the waiting list; we hope to secure funding to start additional series in the future. We have three new series scheduled to start in the spring in Lancaster (catering for schools in South Cumbria and Lancashire), Bedfordshire and Hampshire, and we are talking to several more new groups about potential spring/summer series.
We were able to visit ten groups across the UK this term in addition to the three autumn series we administer in London. Several groups celebrated their 30th year; read more about this in the Masterclass groups in focus article. We would like to thank all of the organisers who have run series this term for all of their hard work and dedication in making the Masterclasses so successful.
We have been working with a number of new Masterclass speakers, including several speakers from Lancaster University. Sam ran a speakers' development session in Worcestershire for the University of Worcester secondary mathematics PGCE students, who went on to deliver a space-themed Masterclass. She also travelled up to Inverness to work with a group of enthusiastic STEM Ambassadors on developing mathematics activities.
If any of you know of potential speakers who you would like to involve in your series, please put them in touch with us for additional support and let us know if you would like our up-to-date support materials.
Our secondary mathematics Masterclass Celebration Days will take place on the following dates this year. If your series ran in the autumn, Sam has sent you a ‘save the date’ email for you to pass on to your students; invitations will be available in the spring.
