Sierpinski triangle investigation

Investigating fractal patterns

Key stage: 2
Subjects: mathematics, patterns

In this series of activities, pupils have an opportunity to explore patterns in maths, starting by considering observed patterns in number sequences.

Through playing 'the chaos game', pupils will be introduced to the concept of fractals, with particular focus on the Sierpinski triangle. This structure is investigated and later revisited through studying the pattern of odd and even numbers in Pascal's triangle (shown above).

Alongside investigating fractal patterns that can emerge from iterations, these activities give an insight into mathematical ways of thinking, touching on concepts such as infinity.

Teachers should read through the activity ideas and make their own risk assessment for them before proceeding with them in the classroom.
