  • Key Stage 2

  • Key Stage 3

This workshop is designed for students between the ages of 9 and 12 years old, It lasts for around four hours including a 30 – 40 minute break for lunch (not provided).

The maximum group size is 30.

In this workshop students will perform their own experiments on a commercial shampoo. They will measure the viscosity, foamability, pH and its emulsifying properties. A key part of this workshop is to give students the chance to think about the design and validity of scientific experiments. Using their results, they can then compare their own shampoo to the commercial product. They will produce a ‘standard’ product then have the opportunity to adjust the recipe according to what properties they liked the most about the shampoo. We encourage the students to think about all aspects of producing a good product through experiment and also help them to understand the cost and marketing aspects involved. This workshop also gives a good introduction to pH, emulsification and ionic chemistry.
