developmentcampaign objectivesReinterpreting the Ri - Initial Target £13 millionThe Ri’s fine 18th Century building, in the heart of London, is a marvellous site, but is in urgent need of reinterpretation. Our Architect, Sir Terry Farrell, previously a commissioner at English Heritage, has been sensitive to the needs of our Grade 1 listed status, while adapting it to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
The Farrell Master Plan will cost some £24 million to complete in total. The initial £13 million phase, as outlined above, will refurbish the public areas of the Ri - with the addition of a café bistro, an interactive Energy Atrium and viewing platforms, as well as improving areas of the Ri's rich heritage, our lecture theatres and other visitor facilities - to create a true Salon for Science. Education and CommunicationThe Ri has been famous since the time of Humphry Davy for its dissemination of science to the widest audience possible. Our Christmas Lectures, inaugurated in 1826 and broadcast to millions through television for the last 25 years - first by the BBC then by Channel 4 and now by five - have helped to create a life-long interest in science for generations of young people. New funds will make it possible to:
ResearchIntegral to the mission of the Ri are the Davy Faraday Research Laboratories (DFRL): Focusing on a unique mix of computational and experimental chemistry, the DFRL produces groundbreaking research year after year. However, this work is created in a dramatically substandard environment. A substantial programme of renovation and re-equipment is needed if our scientists are to continue to produce world-class research. We are also seeking to fund a number of key research posts. |
