The Davy Faraday Research Laboratory (DFRL) works to find new ways to treat and diagnose diseases such as cancer using magnetic nanoparticles. DFRL medics and cell biologists try to perfect the techniques of using magnetic nanoparticles, developed by their chemist and physicist colleagues, and make them safe to use in the body. The picture shows nanoparticles that have been injected into a cell, although the colours have been enhanced. Currently, one technique for detecting breast cancer using iron nanoparticles is on limited clinical trails at University College Hospital.
