How to hunt a submarine

  • Friday Evening Discourses

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A MEMBERS ONLY EVENT

During the Second World War a group of scientists were recruited to develop tactics to be used by aircraft against submarines. Their work marked the birth of ‘operations research'. In this Discourse Prof Körner will look at the mathematics behind some of the problems involved. For example, Prof Körner will investigate if there is any way to help the plane spot the submarine before the submarine spots the plane.
