‘Ravelling, Unravelling' exhibition
Exhibition runs from Tuesday 12 May-Thursday 28 May
The Ri is delighted to be hosting another exhibition of contemporary art in the new social spaces within the Ri. ‘Ravelling, Unravelling' is an exhibition of new works by artist Naheed Raza following a year-long residency in the Mathematics Department at UCL funded by the Wellcome Trust. The works explore the theme of entanglement in biomedical research, and how it connects to related themes in art, literature, philosophy and myth. On display will be ‘Silk' a 16mm film documenting the reeling of the Golden Orb Weaver, a spider unique for the golden hue of the web it weaves; ‘Mile of String' a labyrinthine sculpture made entirely from twisted string and evocative of spatial chaos, Einstein's warped space time and the enigmatic compositions of DNA and proteins; ‘Ravel' a graphic animation produced in collaboration with animator Carl Fairweather; and a series of minute bronze casts of intricate disease-inducing complexes in the body. There will be an opportunity to hear more about the works and the theme of ‘entanglement' in an accompanying event on Tuesday 19 May. For more information click here.
Exhibition supported by a Wellcome Trust Arts award.

How does music trigger powerful emotional experiences when we listen to it? If we can understand this, is it possible to enhance both our responses to listening to music and the expressivity of performers? Conductor Christopher Gayford has been working with music psychologists to tackle these explore questions like this and you can be part of their mass-participation experiment to find out more about how we listen to music. You'll also be able to put some of the new techniques suggested into practice during the premier of a work by composer Peter Salem, performed by the Martindale String Quartet.
