Primary Mathematics Masterclass Programme

Primary Mathematics Masterclass Programme

The Ri Primary Mathematics Programme was established in 1998 in partnership with the University of Cambridge. A growing network of masterclasses, maths clubs and enrichment activities for primary students, it provides support and resources for children and their teachers. The Ri also organises mathematics events and lectures for children. The Ri based programme is complemented by NRICH (web-based activities/resources and workshops for children and teachers) at the University of Cambridge. For details of our secondary programme, please click here. To find out more about the mathematics team at the Ri, please click here.

Primary Mathematics Masterclasses

Children enjoy lively sessions, which, through games, activities and investigations, develop their mathematical reasoning, problem solving and communication skills. Topics range from bubbles and balloons to stars and stripes, from juggling to jelly babies. Within each class, children have the opportunity to explore the subject individually and in small groups, with help always close at hand. The children in a class usually come from a number of schools in the area, so it's also a great chance to make new friends.

Online Resources

The mathematics team are developing a bank of downloadable resources to support teachers and organisers of masterclasses. These include ideas for masterclasses and classroom activities (for both primary and secondary aged pupils), as well as sources of further inspiration. The team will continue to add to the resources page, which can be accessed by clicking here.

The Primary Network

Local volunteers and schools are pivotal to masterclass series. A series requires not only a principal organiser but also mathematical and pastoral support for the children, and administrative and financial support to maintain it. If you would like to learn more about existing provision in your area and/or help organise a series, please get in touch with the Ri mathematics team at maths@ri.ac.uk or on 020 7670 2926.

Primary masterclass

The Ri provides flexible and varied support for masterclasses, offering guidance, exemplars and resources (on organisational and mathematical aspects), small grants, support with raising funds locally, connecting organisers and enrichment providers, facilitating the sharing of ideas, experience and good practice.
