This event will be of interest to many advanced level students but will be particularly useful for those studying AS/A ‘Science in Society' (SiS). Several ideas about ‘How science works' in that specification will be considered and additional guidance for SiS examination candidates will be included in the conference materials. There will also be an opportunity for students to meet the senior examiners.
Harald Schmidt, assistant director of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics will tackle questions about public health: how and when should the governement invervene in our lives to help us be healthy? Should vaccinations be compulsory? Is it ok to qurantine people in times of emergency during threats of global pandemics?
Elizabeth Pisani shares her experiences of the last ten years working as an epidemiologist and AIDS consultant. Elizabeth will describe the practicalities of researching risk behaviour and infectious disease among sex workers and drug addicts in developing cities. She will talk about how science gets communicated to politicians and the public, and how it gets translated into policies that affect all of our lives.
Tickets for this event cost £16 per person who attends, and includes lunch. Groups of 20 or more recieve a 50% discount.
