Henry Marsh is the senior neurosurgeon at the Atkinson Morley's Neurosurgical Department at St.George's Hospital. He specialises in brain tumour surgery, some of which is carried out under local anaesthetic, and was the subject of a recent award-winning documentary on BBC1. He has lectured widely on the hospital environment which he believes has a great impact on patient outcomes and on how effectively staff work. The poor design of many hospitals reflects the mistake of seeing mind and matter as separate entities. Henry argues that recovery from illness is profoundly influenced by states of mind which in turn are greatly influenced by the built environment.
