When?
Drop in between 11.00am and 4.00pm, generally on the first Saturday every other month to see, hear, smell and touch science with a range of hands-on activities, exciting demonstrations and captivating talks. If you're a keen science fan, or wouldn't know the difference between DNA and TNT we've got something for you.
What?
The short talks in the theatre feature plenty of demonstrations and are similar in style to our Christmas Lectures, but light enough to entertain the whole family. The subject of these talks change every month, so even if you've been before you'll find something to entertain you. The hands-on experiments suit all ages, from making your own slime through building a space rocket to some science colouring-in. You can even join Michael Faraday on an interactive tour of our new exhibition to seek out the treasures of the RI with the eGuide.
Eating and Drinking
After all that you will probably have worked up quite an appetite, so why not grab some lunch or a tasty bite in our brand new café? There are snacks for all the family and kids lunch boxes available. We've got activities on for the whole family, even tiny ones, so come together. Please note though, we don't have any childcare facilities, so you'll need to stay with your kids at all times. We don't run family fun days in December and January, because we're all too busy with the Christmas Lectures! The day is fully flexible, so you can drop in for 30 minutes, or stay for the whole 6 hours. Most people tell us that they find there's enough here to fill at least 3 hours.
Coming up:
Saturday 5 June 2010: Kitchen chemistry
A fun-filled day of hands-on science activities using things that you can find in your kitchen. Pick up ideas of stuff to try out at home. Enjoy captivating talks about 'un-kitchen chemistry', featuring the kind of experiments and explosions you definitely can't try at home!
Future dates for your diary:
Saturday 7 August: The Weather
RI members get 2 free child places for every adult ticket purchased by a member. If you're lucky enough to be aged 2 or under you can get in free. All adult tickets are £5 and child tickets are £3.
To try at home
And if you just can't wait, here's a little experiment to try yourself now. Hold one finger up infront of your face at arms length, make sure it is in line with a distant object like a tree or lampost. Now close one eye and then the other, what happens to the positions of your finger and the tree? You can find more experiments to try at home on the Christmas Lectures 2008 'Under the surface' webpage or have a go at some of our online science games.
