July's book
The second book is Brazzaville Beach by acclaimed author William Boyd. Brazzaville Beach explores the life of ecologist Hope Clearwater during three stages of her complicated life: her marriage to a troubled mathematician, her time studying chimpanzees in Africa, and a subsequent period of reflection in which she looks back and tries to make sense of everything that has gone before. The author juggles the biology and maths with civil war, mental breakdowns, religious allegory, and the passion and greed of scientific pursuits, all woven together into an engaging and interlocking story. Blanch D'Alpuget of The New York Times said: "The archangel Lucifer, he who lights up intellect and ambition, is the spirit creating mischief for the men of science who calculate their way through [the novel]."

Admission is free and there is no need to book.
